I haven't really heard the "EL" issue addressed to my satisfaction. How can sacred name groups refer to YHWH as "EL"? Is this not a false god who is the head of the Caananite pantheon? who is obviously not the same as YHWH. I have heard some people try to justify the use saying that "EL" became less popular as his son "Baal" gained more attention. But for some strange reason it still doesn't make sense to me. What does make sense is that the wayward northern tribes, after entering into Caanan, started committing abominable acts, embracing the false gods of the Caananites and in the process started referring to YHWH as "EL" the Caananite god. Syncretism. It just doesn't make sense to me not to use the term "GOD" because of a specific scripture and then turn around and use "EL". The thing that really bugs me is they admit to using it as a name proper not just a title, a mighty one. Does he have two names or one? maybe you can shed some light?
