This is not the controversy it seems to be.

El, Il, Ilu, Allah, Eloah, etc. were used by semitic cultures in refering to a or the deity generically, just as people you know talk about "God" whether they are Christian, Muslim, or Jew, or otherwise.

Surely you know, but 'el and its variants simply mean "mighty one" and the idea of something powerful and outside the forces that give mankind so much trouble. It is not a case where Canaanites were Hebrew-like or vice versa. But both Canaanites and Hebrews are of the same cultural and linguistic stock. It is not really a theological issue.
